RAASA WEBSITE
This is the official website for the Recreational Aviation Administration - South Africa.
They regulate recreational flying and are answerable to the SACAA.
They tend to be far more efficient than the CAA in terms of service delivery.
RAASA handles NPL -LSA (National Pilot Licens - Light Sport Aircraft). If you hold an NPL-LSA, you may fly any three axis aircraft you are rated on, up to a maximum all-up weight of 600kg.

AIRCRAFT ACCIDENTS
If you have never flown before, it is an excellent idea to start with a Trial Lesson.
The total experience takes about an hour and includes a briefing on how the basic controls work and a short flight where you will handle the flight controls in flight, under the guidance and protection of your Flight Instructor.
This experience is guaranteed to give you clarity as to whether flying is something that you'd want to pursue or alternatively, a realistic adventure into the world of aviation.

Our Introductory Flight Experience is currently priced at R1450 in one of our Sling 2s, our two-seater training aircraft, and R1,775 in our larger Cessna 172. Payment can be made via EFT to our banking details below or via card upon arrival and is non-refundable. If in the event that your lesson needs to be postponed due to weather or aircraft maintenance, we will contact you sufficiently prior to your booking to rebook your flight.

It is possible to purchase this experience as a gift for a loved one. Simply send us through their name, the type of aircraft you'd prefer in addition to your preferred times/dates and proof of payment and we'll send you a voucher that can be redeemed at any time. Contact us during office hours to book a Trial Lesson at 033 386 3952 or via our WhatsApp line on 082 854 9124. Alternatively, you can respond to this email with your details and any queries you may have.

This license is your first and mandatory license in your aviation journey. It allows you to fly your friends and family around in any aircraft that you hold a rating on.

The minimum requirements for a PPL are:
-
45 hours of Flight Training (30 dual and 15 solo)
-
8x written SACAA exams (Airlaw, Human Performance, Principles of Flight, Restricted Radio, Meteorology, Aircraft Technical and General, Navigation and Flight Planning)
-
A Restricted Radio License (achieved via 1x written exam, an online course and an in-person oral assessment)
-
Class 2 Aviation Medical (obtained by a designated aviation medical examiner - see the last page of our brochure)
-
17 years of age (you can begin your training at 16)
-
English proficiency level 6 on a National Senior Certificate or a completed english proficiency oral assessment (to be made available to you upon request)
There are many variable factors I flight training such as weather and aircraft maintenance. When we take these into account, although a minimum of 45hrs are required, most people take slightly longer to reach the required standard, especially if they fly part-time. Most people take between 55 to 65 hours so we recommend to budget accordingly. The PPL course costs in the region of R160,000 to R180,000. You can find a cost breakdown of the entire course as well as our Account Policy explaining how we structure our fees attached.
Your training advances at your own pace. You are able to choose how quickly you progress depending on your time and cashflow availabilities and by taking your learning pace into consideration. We recommend you fly no less than once in every 10 days to maintain currency. With flying, like most things, if you don't use it you lose it! If you have the availability to fly every day, we will also be more than happy to accommodate you.
A PPL is your first step towards becoming a professional pilot. You may choose to stop here and fly for fun or personal business or you may choose to continue and obtain your Commercial Pilots License which will allow you to be remunerated for your flying. Should you be interested in our CPL information, please let us know and we'll be more than happy to assist you. Please find our brochure attached for more information.
Please note that there are no formal subject requirements to obtain a pilot’s license with PMB Aero Club.
We recommend taking geography, physical sciences and core maths as these give you a good foundation to begin your theoretical training from however, we have had many a student (including home-schoolers) who have not taken these subjects and handled their PPL ground school and exams with ease.
Here are the youngest ages for the different licenses:
You may start flight training at 15, but must be

-
16 to fly solo, and
-
17 to do your PPL flight test (Private Pilot License). You must be
-
18 to do your CPL flight test (Commercial Pilot License), and
-
21 for your ATPL flight test (Airline Transport Pilot License).

As long as you pass your aviation medical, there is no upper age limit.
If you’re wanting to work full time in aviation, you will need to complete the following to obtain your CPL:

-
A private pilots license
-
Class 1 Medical
-
8x CPL Examinations
-
A General Radio License
-
A Night Rating
-
Various hour requirements depending on the type of CPL you wish to obtain.
You can either work towards a VFR (Visual Flight Rules) or IFR (Instrument Flight Rules) CPL. We highly recommend the IFR CPL course as you will be more “hire-able” as a low time commercial pilot with this qualification.
